The 29 countries
The Schengen area is made up of 29 countries: 25 EU Member States and 4 non-EU countries (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein). Checks at the internal borders between them have been abolished, and all of them apply the same visa rules.

Bulgaria and Romania
Bulgaria and Romania were the last countries to join, on 1 January 2025. Both are among the 29 countries in the list above, so days spent in Bulgaria or Romania count towards the 90 days like days in any other Schengen country.
Cyprus
Cyprus takes part in the Schengen cooperation, but the Council has not yet abolished internal border controls with it, and the integration process into the Schengen area is described as underway. Cyprus is not one of the 29 countries.
Ireland
Ireland is exceptionally allowed by the Schengen Protocol not to apply the Schengen rules, so it keeps its own visa and border policies. It is not one of the 29 countries either.
What this means for your days
Stays in Cyprus and Ireland are not taken into account when the 90/180-day rule is calculated. Days in any of the 29 countries are added together as one period. When ETIAS starts, stays in Cyprus will be calculated separately from the others, as set out in the ETIAS guide.
The United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is outside the Schengen area, and time spent there does not count towards the 90 days.
Use the calculator on the home page to count your own stays.
